BEIJING — Tesla is facing its largest recall action to date after Chinese regulators ordered safety fixes affecting nearly 3 million vehicles, as authorities intensify scrutiny of emergency door-release systems across the fast-growing electric vehicle market. The recall covers approximately 2.98 million Tesla vehicles in China, including locally produced and imported Model 3, Model Y, Model S and Model X vehicles. At the center of the issue are emergency mechanical door releases. Regulators raised concerns that, following a serious collision or electrical failure, the releases could be difficult for passengers to locate or operate — potentially making it harder for occupants to escape or for rescuers to gain access. Tesla is expected to address the issue through a combination of warning labels, clearer emergency-release identification and over-the-air software updates, depending on the vehicle. A Record Recall for China Tesla is not alone. The action forms part of a much larger safety campaign involving several automakers and approximately 4.3 million vehicles across China, making it the country’s largest automotive recall campaign to date. Tesla represents the biggest share, with almost 3 million affected vehicles. The scale of the action sends a clear message to the global automotive industry: as vehicles become increasingly digital, automated and software-driven, regulators are putting greater attention on whether advanced design features remain safe during real-world emergencies. EV Design Meets a New Safety Reality Flush and electronically operated door handles have become a signature design feature of many modern electric vehicles, offering cleaner aerodynamics and a futuristic appearance. But regulators are increasingly questioning what happens when technology fails. If a serious accident disables a vehicle’s electrical system, passengers still need a simple and immediately understandable way to exit the vehicle. China is now moving toward stricter standards for vehicle door systems, including new requirements that will reshape how automakers design future EVs. What It Means for Tesla The recall represents a major operational challenge for Tesla in one of the world’s most important electric vehicle markets. However, because some of the corrective measures can be delivered through software rather than traditional mechanical repairs, the financial impact may be very different from conventional recalls involving millions of physical replacement parts. The bigger issue could be strategic. The recall highlights a growing global debate around the balance between innovation, minimalist vehicle design and fundamental safety systems. For Tesla — one of the companies that helped redefine what a modern car looks and feels like — the message from regulators is becoming increasingly clear: The future of mobility can be digital, intelligent and beautifully designed — but in an emergency, safety still has to come first.
