Mecca Agreement for Mutual Defense.

Iran has reportedly received an invitation to join the newly established “Mecca Agreement for Mutual Defense,” a regional security pact formed by Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan. A senior Iranian official confirmed that Tehran is currently reviewing the proposal, though official confirmation has not yet been issued by Iran’s Foreign Ministry or member state governments.

Signed on August 7 by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the mutual defense pact establishes that an attack on any single member state will be treated as an attack against all three. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan likened the collective security clause to NATO’s Article 5, while emphasizing that the alliance is not directed at Iran or any specific foreign nation.
