Political Amnesty Law Takes Effect—but Article 112 Remains Excluded

Thailand’s new Peaceful Society Promotion Act took effect on 24 August, introducing political amnesty for certain offences connected to protests and political conflict between 2005 and 2025.

Approximately 6,000 people could potentially benefit, although every case must pass an official review process. Serious offences involving corruption, injury, death and violations of Article 112 are excluded.

Supporters view the legislation as an important step towards political reconciliation. Critics argue that its exclusions mean some of Thailand’s deepest political divisions will remain unresolved. The debate is expected to continue both in Parliament and across social media.
