Apple’s upcoming iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are shaping up to be more than routine yearly updates. Rumours suggest the next Pro models could introduce significant changes across performance, battery life, cameras, connectivity and design. The new iPhones are expected to arrive in September, with September 9 currently being tipped as a possible launch date. Apple has not officially confirmed the date or the specifications of the devices. Among the most talked-about upgrades are a new 2nm A20 Pro chip, larger batteries, Apple’s next-generation C2 modem and changes to the camera system. The Dynamic Island could also become smaller, while satellite connectivity may receive an upgrade. As with any unreleased Apple product, these details remain based on leaks and rumours. However, if several of these reports prove accurate, the iPhone 18 Pro could offer a more substantial upgrade than the iPhone 17 Pro. A New Chip Could Deliver More Power With Less Energy The A20 Pro could be one of the biggest changes inside the iPhone 18 Pro. Apple is rumoured to be preparing its first smartphone processor built using TSMC’s 2nm manufacturing process. According to claims from Weibo tipster Fixed Focus Digital, the A20 Pro could be around 18 per cent faster than the A19 Pro while consuming up to 30 per cent less power. The chip is also expected to use TSMC’s newer Gate-All-Around technology. If these figures are accurate, the efficiency gains could be particularly useful for demanding activities such as gaming and on-device artificial intelligence. At the same time, the more advanced manufacturing process could increase production costs, potentially affecting the overall cost of the device. Bigger Batteries Could Add to the Efficiency Gains Battery capacity could also increase, particularly on the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Rumoured figures suggest the US version could have a battery of around 5,425mAh, while models with a physical SIM slot could reportedly use a 5,235mAh battery. For comparison, reported capacities for different iPhone 17 Pro Max versions stand at 5,088mAh and 4,823mAh. That would represent an increase of roughly 10 per cent for the corresponding versions. The larger battery could work alongside the more efficient A20 Pro chip and Apple’s rumoured C2 modem. Together, these changes could help improve everyday battery endurance. The C2 modem would also represent another step in Apple’s move toward developing more of its modem technology internally. The new modem is expected to focus on power efficiency and cellular performance while giving Apple greater control over the interaction between its hardware and software. A Variable-Aperture Camera Could Change Photography Camera improvements could be another major part of the iPhone 18 Pro story. Apple has used fixed-aperture main cameras on its Pro iPhones for years, but the company is rumoured to be considering a variable-aperture system. A variable aperture allows the camera to adjust how much light enters the lens. This can provide greater control over depth of field and how much of a scene remains in focus. However, the feature may not be available on both Pro models. One rumour suggests Apple could reserve the variable-aperture camera for the larger iPhone 18 Pro Max because the system requires additional internal space. The iPhone 18 Pro is still expected to feature three rear cameras, with 48-megapixel sensors covering the main, ultra-wide and telephoto cameras. The focus could therefore remain on improvements to sensors, optics and computational photography rather than simply increasing megapixel counts. The front camera is also expected to remain an 18-megapixel Center Stage camera. Camera Control Could Get a Simpler Design Apple’s Camera Control button could also receive a change. The current system uses touch-sensitive elements to provide controls for functions such as zoom and exposure. For the iPhone 18 generation, Apple is rumoured to be simplifying the system by removing some of those touch-sensitive components while retaining the main camera controls. The change may appear relatively small, but a simpler control system could make the feature easier to use in everyday photography. A Smaller Dynamic Island May Be on the Way The Dynamic Island could also become smaller with the iPhone 18 Pro. Leaks suggest Apple may move some Face ID components beneath the display, allowing the pill-shaped cutout to occupy less space. The display itself could also benefit from LTPO+ technology. The newer panel technology is expected to provide more precise control over the OLED display and potentially improve power efficiency. Satellite Connectivity Could Become More Useful Apple already offers satellite connectivity for emergency services and limited communication features. The iPhone 18 Pro could expand on this capability, with reports suggesting Apple is exploring satellite-based 5G connectivity. If introduced, the technology could allow users to access more services in areas where conventional mobile networks are unavailable. Its usefulness, however, would depend on network infrastructure and availability in individual markets. The reported hardware upgrades could also come with a higher price. The iPhone 17 Pro currently starts at Rs 1,34,900 in India, while rumours suggest the iPhone 18 Pro could start around Rs 1,39,900. Other leaks have pointed to a possible increase of Rs 10,000 to Rs 20,000 depending on the model and storage configuration. The iPhone 18 Pro Max is also rumoured to start at around Rs 1,54,900 in India. Apple has not confirmed the pricing, specifications or launch date of the iPhone 18 Pro series. Until the company makes an official announcement, these details should be treated as unconfirmed reports rather than final specifications.
